Giardino degli Aranci: the unexpected place with a breathtaking view
We are here, on the refined Aventine Hill, in the Rione Ripa, to admire one of the most enchanting views of the historic center of the Eternal City, accompanied by the music of street artists, who often stop to strum on the balcony…
Today we take you to discover the Orange Garden, or Savello Park, a hidden place in Rome designed and built in 1932 by the architect Raffaele De Vico, on the land that in the 10th century housed the fortress of the Savelli family (from which, in fact, it takes its name).
The typical feature, in addition to the breathtaking view, is the presence of very fragrant bitter orange trees. An ancient legend says that these oranges are even miraculous. But be careful: picking the fruit is absolutely forbidden!
The Orange Garden offers a superb 180° view of the Eternal City, with a parapet that embraces the portion of Baroque Rome, starting from the Dome and reaching the Roman Forum.
It is a quiet, romantic, peaceful but also lively place, especially when the sun goes down and couples and tourists enjoy the view accompanied by the music of street singers. The benches, placed between the iconic orange trees and the shade of the pines, guarantee a regenerating break for tourists visiting or for locals who want to carve out a few hours of relaxation.
We are also just a stone's throw from some of the most beautiful churches in the city, such as Santa Sabina, Sant'Alessio and Sant'Anselmo, and other tourist attractions worth visiting, such as the Buco della Serratura, where you can admire the Dome of St. Peter's Basilica from a truly unique perspective, or the Rose Garden.
