Historic and Art Cafés: A Journey Through Unmissable Places and Flavors in Rome
Here, in the Eternal City, even sipping a coffee can become an experience, in those living rooms where we feel like we've gone back in time, on a journey through ancient perceptions and new flavors...
Rome, in its splendid historical center but also in the less touristy neighborhoods, is full of ancient cafes. Each of them has its own history, its traditions and is able to tell us something more about the Eternal City and about those who, passing through the Capital, have been fascinated by it - such as actors, directors, intellectuals and illustrious people.
Today our concierge takes us to discover 5 historic and artistic cafes in Rome, perfect for a break during a pleasure trip but also a place-to-be for locals, the true Romans who, at least once in their lives, must treat themselves to a visit.
Caffè Sant'Eustachio
Perhaps Rome’s coffee par excellence: our journey begins at Caffè Sant’Eustachio, the oldest coffee roaster in the historic center. Here, tradition is jealously preserved: the use of the best Arabica coffees in the blend makes the place a must-see for lovers of the drink.
Antico Caffè Greco
After the most popular café in the Eternal City, let's move on to the most historic (for real!): we are at the Antico Caffè Greco, founded in the wonderful Via dei Condotti in 1760 by Nicola della Maddalena, known as the Greek for his origins. It is the second oldest café in Italy after the Florian in Venice. Here, after a morning of shopping, a visit is a must: in fact, famous people such as D'Annunzio, Casanova, Nietzsche, Pasolini, Leopardi, Moravia and many others have sat within these walls.
Caffè Palombini
Probably less historic than the others, but an undisputed symbol of the EUR district and assiduously frequented by tourists but especially by Romans. Palombini was born in 1963 from the idea of Giovanni Palombini, who wanted to create a multifunctional activity of great scope in what would become the business district of the new Rome. We are just a few minutes from our Hotels American Palace and Hotel Cristoforo Colombo..
Sciascia Caffè
Our journey continues in the Prati neighborhood, in Via Fabio Massimo number 80, a 10-minute walk from our Hotel Orazio Palace: here, since 1919, there is Sciascia Caffè, a retro-style place with an impeccable espresso coffee and some delicious variations that have always attracted tourists and Romans. A visit is a must!
Castroni
Castroni's story is poetic and known to many, Romans and non-Romans: born as a "family kiosk" in 1932 on the Lungotevere, it only later acquired the historic premises in via Cola di Rienzo. Today Castroni is a coffee roasting company, a well-known and loved reality in Rome, synonymous with "good coffee" that also offers a café, grocery store and many typical products.
